Reminder,,,,
Monday May 27th is FREE FISH DAY in PA. No License Required that
day.
We wish you
all a Happy Memorial Day, and Great Fishing !!
( Ok, down to
business. Our report this week is direct from the stream and one of
the areas top guides, Ken Mead. )
"Things have been hot and cold locally over the past 2 weeks-
We've had some pretty significant water temp changes and now
have pretty low water for this time of year. Despite this,
fishing has started to become more consistent and we're seeing
lots of different bugs in recent days- On cloudy days there's
been some really good Blue Wing Olives in size 18 and sometimes
16. Try fishing emerger patterns and rusty spinners in addition
to dun patterns. You'll be surprised at how your fish counts
will go up!
Sulfurs and March Browns are also getting going and this should
provide some of the best fishing of the year! Again, carry all
stages of these patterns because you never know what will be
working, and like the BWO's, emerger and spinner fishing can be
more productive than fishing duns. The March Browns are great to
fish because they hatch sporadically thru out the day with some
occasional concentrated spinner falls- The Lehigh and other
Pocono streams can have tremendous spinner falls just before
dark. Once the March Browns get started, the fish really key
into them and fishing a fishing dun or emerger pattern over a
rising fish anytime during the day can draw some explosive
results!
Fishing Beadhead Pheasant Tail during non-hatch times will also
be very productive since they imitate the various species of
Sulfurs that inhabit our streams this time of year.
Caddis Hatches can also be extremely important now. Carry a good
selection of emergers and adult patterns in tan, grey and
brown/cinnamon and during non-hatch periods try olive or green
Beadhead caddis larva.
For those who want to travel a bit, The Delaware system is
fishing very well and the Sulfurs have already going on Lehigh
Valley streams. The Hatch carries a variety of patterns specific
to both areas.
As
always, streamer fishing can be productive, especially in low
light conditions"....
Here are some
of the flies you should be using.

WHITE WATER RELEASES FOR 2013
( As per the Francis E.
Walter Reservoir Recreation Operations Plan for 2013 )
www.nap.usace.army.mil/Portals/39/docs/Civil/Walter/2013%20Final%20walterrecplan.pdf
The plan for 2013 will incorporate
some changes that were agreed upon by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers,
Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and the
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission based upon past program performance as
well as input received through stakeholders.
This year there are two different release schedules.
Water is
being allocated to ensure FISHERIES RELEASES
from 1 July through 8 September, and
WHITE WATER RELEASES from 1 July through 18
August,
while relying on seasonal precipitation and additional water accumulations
to allow scheduling of releases for later in the season (late August through
October). The primary objective of this plan is to obtain a pool level of at
least elevation 1365 by 1 July while not exceeding elevation 1370 at any
time for recreational purposes.
FISHING RELEASE DATES
(target 400 cubic feet per second) are:
April 13* & 14* -
Saturday & Sunday √
April 20* & 21* -
Saturday & Sunday √
April 27* & 28* -
Saturday & Sunday √
May 4* & 5* -
Saturday & Sunday
√
May 12* - Sunday
Only
√
May 19* - Sunday
Only
√
**October
11 - Friday
**October
- Monday
All dates above are dependent on hydrologic
conditions and the absence of need for flood control operations.
*Release flows
will be set to match in flow with a target release of up to 400 cfs.
Any cancellation will be announced the
Wednesday prior to the planned fishing date.
Initial maximum storage level for 2013
will be same as last year, at elevation 1365.
NOTE: Water Release times on each Saturday and Sunday
will be 12 hour periods from 1am to 1pm each day of release.
WHITE WATER RELEASE
DATES are:
SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS..
May 11 & 18
√
May 25 & 26
June 8 & 9
June 22 & 23
July 6 & 7
July 20 & 21
July 27 & 28
August 3 & 4
August 10 & 11
August 17 & 18
August 24* & 25*
August 31*, Sept 1*
**October 12 & 13 - (planned
1700 cfs)
*With the pool at 1365 on July 1, storage is
sufficient to support planned white water recreation
releases through Aug. 18 and fisheries enhancement releases of up to 100cfs
through July 27 and up to 50 cfs through September 8, 2013. After those dates
additional water must be accumulated during the recreation season to make
additional releases possible.
**
The October 11 thru 14th release is for both fishing and white water and
will occur only if sufficient water is available. This release date of Oct
11 - 14 is intended to release all excess water.
